Nigeria’s oldest Pastor Samuel Sadela, dies at 114

Indications emerged on Tuesday that the Founder and President of the Gospel Apostolic Church, Pa Samuel Sadela, has passed on.

He was aged 114.

Although a senior pastor in the church reportedly claimed that the man described as one of Nigeria’s oldest pastors could still be receiving treatment in a hospital, he was said to have died in the premises of the church in Lagos.

As at 9pm press time on Tuesday, an official statement was still being awaited even as the church was said to have opened a condolence register for the man of God who remained sensational even as a very old man.

Sadela was of the Apostolic stock of Christianity.

His pastoral calling started in 1928 when he visited the famous Prophet Moses Orimolade of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church.

When he marked his 113 birthday, the aged pastor had expressed hope to live up to 200 years of age.

He had said “I feel happy to be this old. Actually, I feel like a young man. I still enjoy my meal of Iyan (pounded yam), Eba and bush meat. I sleep whenever I want to and wake up stronger I want to live longer to prove to all that God remains the same as He was in times past. If Methuselah could live for 969 years, God can make me live well beyond 113. If Noah could be 950, it is not too much for Him to make me live up to 200.”

Even if that wish was not granted, Sadela left an indelible imprint in the hearts of his members and those who admire him.

The cleric, who claimed angels taught him to read the Holy Bible when he was only two years of age, raised not a few eye brows when he married a 30-year-old woman in 2007.

“The Lord is my strength. I am very strong and energetic,” he was quoted as saying after the wedding in Lagos.

According to reports, he first got married in 1934, with the marriage lasting for 21 years, but none of the couple’s seven children reportedly lived beyond their infancy. A second marriage, said to have been consummated in 1965, was blessed with four children, but only two survived. His second wife died in 2001.

A native of Ondo State, Sadela attended St. Paul’s Anglican Primary School, Ifon, Osun State, but had to drop out when he travelled to Sapele, Delta State to work as houseboy to one Captain Pullen, a District Officer. Sadela however retraced his steps in 1918 and completed his Standard six education in 1920.

Meanwhile, reactions from clerics have greeted his death. The Osun State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, in a phone interview with our correspondent, expressed shock at Sadela’s passing.

He prayed that God, ‘will comfort his family.’

Similarly, the founder of Christ Overcomer’s Assembly, Rev. Dipo Filani, described Sadela as a highly respected man of God.

“He was one of the oldest pastors alive in Nigeria. There was a time he said miracles started taking place in his ministry when he was 90 years.

“He was a highly respected pastor. This was a man who would mount the pulpit like a 40 year-old. He was a living testimony of what God could do in the lives of the faithful. I am pained because I have not met him in person,” Filani said.

One Strange Thing That Can Cause Belly Fat

We don't have to tell you that eating tons of sugary nonsense is going to make you gain weight. You know this. But what you may not know is that hanging out with Negative Nancys may have the same effect, according to a new study from Northwestern University published in the American Journal of Epidemiology
Researchers analyzed data collected from 3,074 participants during a 10-year period. The study tracked participants' weights, as well as their "exposure to supportive and negative relationships." Turns out, the study subjects who reported having the most supportive relationships on a consistent basis were less likely to increase their BMI than those who surrounded themselves with toxic friends.
So why do people who make you feel down cause your weight to go up? The study authors say that it all boils down to stress: Spending lots of time around negative people often leads to developing "maladaptive health-related coping behaviors" (in other words, you may turn to food as a release or stop exercising because you're not in a good state of mind). At the same time, surrounding yourself with positive people may buffer the effect—because when you feel like you have social support, you're less likely to turn to food for comfort or use other unhealthy coping strategies.
Moral of the story? Ditch the negative people in your life—your waistline will be better off for it. (And if you need help ending some of your less-than-healthy relationships, read these tips for how to break up with a friend). Focus on surrounding yourself with positive people, and be sure to check out these six tips on how to make your friendships even stronger.

SHOCKER: 7 Billion Naira fraud rocks Skye Bank from top to bottom, customers apprehensive

Timothy Oguntayo’s led Skye Bank Plc, might have bitten more than they can chew as the financial institution is reportedly in a quagmire over a 7 Billion naira fraud that’s rocking its foundation. Skye Bank Plc is facing one of the toughest fraud cases of all time; a whopping N7billion suit preferred against it by one of its clients, Jorotom International Agency Nigeria Limited, National Enquirer reports. According to the statement of claims, the plaintiffs-Jorotom and its subsidiary, National Clearing and Forwarding Agency are alleging fraud, excess charges, greed, high handedness, betrayer and large scale scam on the part of Timothy Oguntayo-led bank and has since sought a legal redress to get its pound of flesh as a result of the monumental racket the bank has perpetrated. Meanwhile some customers who have heard of the suit are apprehensive about saving their money with the financial institution. Some have opted to withdraw their hard earned money swiftly as at yesterday the 25th of August 2014. Tracing the genesis of the chumming business relationship that later went sour, we gathered that, the managing director of the international agency, Jorotom, Snr. Evangelist John Omotosho had approached the management of Skye Bank in his bid to acquire one of the multi-billion Naira federal government agencies, National Clearing and Forwarding Agency, NACFA when it was declared to be sold years back. We were reliably informed that, Skye Bank, as the financier had injected a whopping N3.6billion into the acquisition with a view to supporting Jorotom’s vision and later get its investment back through a mutual conformity and business co operation both parties had agreed. Informed sources disclosed to this office that, no sooner the company commenced business than Skye bank moved in by forcefully demanded that, some of its top staffers be drafted on the company’s (NAFCA) board as directors and not just that, they were planted in strategic positions to run the affirs directly. Quoting the court papers made available to SocietyGists, “the agents/staff of Skye Bank which were drafted to NAFCA as directors and the offices they held are: Kehinde Durosinmi-Etti (Chairman), Olorunfemi Peter (Executive Director) and Bayo Sarunmi (Finance Director) respectively. These top echelon of Skye Bank which include the immediate past managing director were forcefully planted to run the day to day affairs of the company including receiving and disbursing of funds in a bid to equip their money by fire by force. We were told that, in its process of running the company, Skye Bank via its agents was excessively charging the company aside other frivolous spending that almost dwindle its fortune. Sad enough is the fact that, the bank later withdrew its agents and declared the firm unfit to pay its bills, thereby inviting the Asset Corporation of Nigeria-AMCON, another federal government agency created as a key stabilizing and re-vitalizing tool to revive the financial system by efficiently resolving the non-performing loan assets of the banks in the Nigerian economy to take over. All efforts by Jorotom International agency’s management to resolve the matter amicably via its auditors, Biyi Adeniran & Co. were futile as even when the auditors detected a large scale fraud, Skye Bank was so adamant in offering the company for AMCON in order to safe its face. There are other damaging expose which the auditors, Biyi Adeniran uncovered against Skye Bank, all these are what the Plaintiff, Jorotom International agency is relying on to prosecute its case and its team of lawyers have promised to make the full report of the large scale fraud against Skye Bank available to this office as events unfold in court. Efforts to reach those in the corporate affairs department of the bank proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.

Nigerian Military Claims Repatriated Soldiers On Their Way To Another Mission To Combat Boko Haram

The Nigerian military, in a statement today, claimed that the absconding 480 Nigerian soldiers who fled to Cameroon during a clash with Boko Haram have returned, and will be sent on another another counter-insurgency mission.
Gamboru-Ngala bridge destroyed by Boko Haram earlier this year
SaharaReporters gathered yesterday that the soldiers have met with their superiors and were actually in good spirits, returning with their weapons and equipment all intact.
The Nigerian military yesterday alleged that the mass desertion during a fight in the town of Gamboru-Ngala, on the Cameroonian-Nigerian border, was in fact a "tactical manuever". However, SaharaReporters gathered yesterday from a source on the inside that the soldiers retreated, fearing the superior firepower and weaponry of the militants.

Read the release below.
The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that troops who returned from Cameroon were today addressed by the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Major General Zaruwa as they embark on another mission in the Counter Terrorism campaign.

All the soldiers are in high spirit with all their weapons and equipment intact.

Tinubu wishes Ribadu ‘Goodluck’ on Twitter

Vulcanizer in court for stealing BRT tyre

A 34-year-old man, Kazeem Shina, and one Dare Ajayi, have been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court for allegedly stealing a tyre belonging to the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transport.
Shina, who worked with the BRT as a vulcanizer, was said to have colluded with Ajayi to sell the tyre, when they were caught.
The tyre was said to be worth N80,000.
It was learnt that Shina had pleaded with a BRT driver who had driven into the Ojota office of the company to refuel his tank, to assist him in conveying the tyre to a place where another vehicle had broken down.
The BRT driver was said to have been accompanied by a boy.
However, when they got to the place, no vehicle was seen by the driver, arousing suspicion.
The driver was said to have left the boy with the tyre and left.
Upon his return to the place he dropped off the boy, he was said to have discovered the tyre was no longer there.
He later traced the boy and found him taking the tyre to an unknown destination.
It was learnt that when the boy saw the driver, he abandoned the tyre and took to his heels.
After investigation, the police arrested Shina and Dare and arraigned them on two counts of stealing.
The charges read, “That you, Kazeem Shina, Dare Ajayi and others at large on August 10, 2014, at about 12pm, at Iponri Lagos in the Lagos Magsiterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; stealing.
“That you did steal one big tyre with ream valued the sum of N80,000 only, property of BRT company, Lagos.”
The police prosecutor, Corporal Cyriacus Osuji, said the offence was punishable under sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The Magistrate, E.O. Ogunkanmi, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
“The sureties must be gainfully employed and resident in Lagos State. They must also depose to an affidavit of means and show evidence of tax payment. One of the sureties should be a blood relation of the defendants,” he added.
The matter was adjourned till October 13, 2014.

Nigeria’s True Heroes And Villains By Okey Ndibe

The dreaded Ebola virus and Boko Haram represent different faces of two most dire crises currently plaguing Nigeria. The former is a natural contagion, the latter a human-made disaster.
Patrick Sawyer, a now deceased Liberian American diplomat, has become a well-known—and widely despised name—in Nigeria. It was he who first ferried the Ebola virus into Nigeria when he traveled into Lagos by flight on July 20. Mr. Sawyer, a senior official of the Economic Community of West African States, apparently knew he was stricken with Ebola, but irresponsibly decided to travel to Nigeria to attend an ECOWAS event in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State. His sister had died of Ebola in Liberian.
Had the Liberian American diplomat not slumped at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos and been rushed to First Consultants Medical Center in Obalende, he would have flown to Calabar, exposing many more people, Nigerians as well as foreigners, to a virus that eviscerates more than half of its infected victims.
That this nightmare scenario did not play out owed to the sheer vigilance, diligence and alertness of the doctors at First Consultants Medical Center. From all accounts, Mr. Sawyer was bent on making it to Calabar. He cajoled the doctors to discharge him. When they would not do so, he brought in ECOWAS officials in Lagos to badger, plead and threaten on his behalf. The doctors refused to yield.
In a statement, the hospital’s medical team stated: “We refused for him to be let out of the hospital in spite of intense pressure, as we were told that he was a senior ECOWAS official and had an important role to play at the ECOWAS convention in Calabar, Cross River State.”
Thank God for the doctors’ stubbornness. For, five days after arriving in Lagos, Mr. Sawyer was dead, the first confirmed case of an Ebola fatality in Nigeria.
Four others have since died of the virus as well, victims of Mr. Sawyer’s callous call. The dead include Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, who led the medical team that treated Mr. Sawyer, and two nurses at First Consultants Medical Center.
Nigeria’s evolving Ebola drama is replete with moments of heroism as well as villainy. Dr. Adadevoh and her nurses have been deservedly celebrated for their noble role. The late doctor’s courage probably saved the lives of hundreds of people. She could have withered in the face of Mr. Sawyer’s persistence to be discharged from the hospital. Once the Liberian American patient began to marshal ECOWAS and other top shots to advocate his release, the medical team at First Consultants could have let him have his way. They could have let it be somebody else’s problem. Instead, they stood for professional rigor, for medical soundness, for a decision that best served public health.
Their actions were admirable, and spoke to their true heroic acumen.
Each year, the Federal Government selects a roster of people to receive a variety of national honors. It’s often a predictable and uninspiring list, a collection of public office holders and their minions in the private sector. In a half-decent society, many a recipient of the so-called national honors would be in jail, rather than strutting the stage. A long history of bestowing titles on the clearly undeserving and certifiably undistinguished has cheapened Nigeria’s so-called national honor, making it (and many of its recipients) a laughing stock. Often, it appears as if the roster seeks to elevate and celebrate crooks and ruffians.
The story of Dr. Adadevoh and her medical team is a reminder of the many unsung heroes who, day in and day out, do the right thing to keep Nigeria going. Such heroic people hardly ever make a spectacle of themselves. They hardly bedeck themselves, peacock-style, as many Nigerian money-miss-roaders do. They simply work quietly, diligently, to make some corner of the Nigerian space a little better than they found it.
In some sense, there are two competing visions and versions of Nigeria. In one, officialdom holds up obscenely rich past and present occupants of public offices and their partners in the private sector as the country’s “critical stakeholders.” In the other, the Adadevohs of Nigeria enjoy celebration and quiet admiration for their critical role in preserving a healthy sense of ethos. The numerous tributes to Dr. Adadevoh’s memory, on the Internet as well as in print media, testify to her ethical and professional grandeur.
I’d suggest that Nigeria’s officialdom is too wedded to aggrandizement to realize that there’s often little or no weight to those it honors, little or no moment to the values it promotes. Its version of accomplishment, I believe, mistakes flash and glitter for substance and significance. It sorely needs to develop an imaginative faculty.
The imagination I refer to is to enable officialdom to recognize the presence, in every sector of Nigerian life, of extraordinary people whose dedication to duty and sacrifices fuel the sputtering engine of Nigerian progress and development.
Quite simply, there are many other Adadevohs in Nigeria. They may be in short supply, relative both to Nigeria’s needs as well as the sheer size of villains hard at work out there, but they exist. To give one example: such heroes are to be found among the sometimes ill-equipped soldiers who bravely march off each day to do battle with Islamist insurgents ravaging several states in northeastern Nigeria.
It is no secret that these soldiers have great odds starched against them. They are sometimes deployed without adequate weaponry. Some have complained of late payment of their allowances. In fact, some of them have mutinied to draw attention to their plight. In the history of modern warfare, I don’t believe it had ever happened before that some wives of soldiers locked their husbands at home to forestall their deployment.
Yet, this much is clear: but for many soldiers’ steely determination and moving sacrifice, Nigeria would long have collapsed in a heap, becoming a colossal shambles, a space overrun by blood-hungry zealots.
Nigerians owe a huge debt to these soldiers and to the memories of its many Adadevohs felled by disease or bullets. The first installment on that debt lies in realizing who our real heroes are—and who are merely usurpers and pretenders. If Nigerian officialdom insists on venerating knaves, ethically famished figures, and other questionable characters, then enlightened Nigerians ought to insist, with even greater fervor, on celebrating the excellent and immortalize the true greats.

For a symbolic start, some Nigerian medical school should seek funds from individuals, corporations and governments to support research on Ebola and other deadly viruses. And name the research center for Dr. Adadevoh.

I became a fisherman to earn money to buy boots – Kunle Odunlami

Super Eagles defender, Kunle Odunlami has a big story to tell in his recent interview about his grass to grace read his story below

What effect does the 2014 World Cup have on you, being your first time?

Being at the World Cup is perhaps the greatest aspiration for any player; it’s only second to winning the tournament. It was my first time to be at the tournament, but most importantly, it gave me the opportunity to interact well with the rest of my teammates. Playing alongside players like Mikel Obi and Vincent Enyeama really inspired me. The experience can’t really be quantified.

But how apprehensive were the Super Eagles when you knew you would be up against highly-rated Argentina at the group stage?

There was not an element of fear in the team; we knew right from the beginning that Nigeria would qualify from that group. Argentina had quality players but we had an equally good team in our line-up. I don’t agree with people when they say Argentina had players with better profile than Nigeria at the World Cup. It is easy for anyone to think this because a good number of the Argentines ply their trade with top clubs in Europe, but we also have players with big clubs in Europe. There was nothing special about Argentina at the tournament; you could see that we almost beat them. We were undone by hard luck at the World Cup, but that’s football. You win some, you lose some. There are some games you will play well and lose, and others you play badly and win. We even had more chances than Argentina but the game didn’t go our way.

Lionel Messi scored twice against Nigeria and when he was substituted, Nigeria seemed to play a better game?

Messi is a great player but he was not a major threat in that game. (Kenneth) Omeruo marked him well, and (Juwon) Oshaniwa also did the same. In football, one second’s loss of concentration can decide the game and that was how we conceded those goals. That’s what makes football interesting; you have to be alert all the time.

What do you think Stephen Keshi sees in you as a home-based player?

The coach is very experienced both as a former player and in managing national teams. It is obvious to everyone that he knows what he wants, so he knows how to deploy a player to play certain roles. I always get confidence boost from coaches even at Sunshine Stars. They believe I can do certain things on the pitch, and I always make sure I don’t disappoint them. I’m ambitious just like any other player, I want to win laurels, but I can only do that under an experienced coach like Keshi. He has shown me the way on how to improve and I’m grateful.

What kind of support do you get from Sunshine Stars when you play in the national team?

The club wants its players to succeed. They always tell us that we’re not going there to represent ourselves alone but also representing the club. The players know what is at stake whenever we play in the national team that’s why we put in everything we’ve got.

Do you think Nigeria could have won the African Nations Championship earlier in the year?

Of course, we could have won it. There was nothing wrong with the team, only that Ghana took their chances better than us when they beat us in the semi-finals. Mind you, it was the first time Nigeria would play in that tournament and most of our opponents had featured in all the editions. I also don’t think it was proper for anyone to refer to the Nigeria team as home-based Super Eagles. We played against players who were first choice in their respective countries so we regarded ourselves as the full national team at the competition. That further strengthened us in our resolve not to disappoint our fans. It was barely a year after Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, so we wanted to repeat the feat, but sometimes things don’t go the way you plan.

But you were expecting to win the tournament.

Yes. But I felt bad that we finished as third best. Thank God it was not a failure but I would have loved us to win the title in our first attempt. It was not just me, everybody in the team felt the same way. We had thought we would win. When we lost to Ghana, it was like someone died among us, nobody could go for dinner that evening. The coaches had to work on us to bring back our confidence.

How do you rate Nigerian league as a result of the CHAN?

We still have a long way to go in encouraging players in the Nigerian league. For instance, we could see how the South Africans were cheering their players even when they were losing. Over there, if you win, they praise you, if you lose or draw, they still praise you. That’s unlike in Nigeria where you only get praise when you win. Nobody wants to understand the reason you failed; they criticise you even when you get a draw. That shouldn’t be the way to encourage your players.

At the World Cup you didn’t get the chance to actually play. How were you feeling on the bench?

I believe everything will happen in God’s time. At the World Cup, I don’t think I could have done better than Oshaniwa or any of the defenders. They played very well. I didn’t feel bad at all because we all couldn’t have played at the same time. It was a privilege that I was with the team in Brazil. There were equally good players who didn’t make the cut.

Did you start your football as a defender? You seem to be a mobile player.

I used to play as a right winger, but I was converted by coach Afo of Golden Star, a grass roots club in Lagos . During a match, our central defender was injured so the coach thought I would be a good replacement due to my height. I played well in that role and since then he kept me there. So even when I moved to other clubs I decided to play in that role and that was how everyone had come to know me.

How did you start your career?

After playing in Lagos for the amateur clubs, I left for Ogbomoso to join Crown FC for two months in 2004 but I was not signed on. They told me I was to replace a player who was injured but that the player had returned to take his role. They told me they had to consider him ahead of me because the player stayed with them when they went through financial crisis. They were paying him back for his loyalty. From there, I went to Iwo to play for Olaoluwa FC at Amateur Three level. I decided to play for this club because I didn’t want to come back to Lagos empty-handed. I helped the club in gaining promotion to the Amateur Two and to Amateur One. But they didn’t have money to contest for slots in the National League. So I left them to play for Ilaoragun, then I later joined Dolphins. Somehow, Dolphins couldn’t sign me on too, so I left for Lagos. I tried to play for Union Bank in Lagos but things didn’t work out so I travelled to Ede in Osun State to join Gray FC in the amateur division. I played just five matches for them before First Bank invited me to join them. That season in 2012, I went to Ilorin for a trial with Kwara United but I was not comfortable with the way things were going there so I moved away. But on my way to Lagos, I learnt Sunshine Stars were having trials, so I went there. I’ve been with them since then. I was drafted to the team by coach Abimbola when he saw how I played in a friendly against Warri Wolves.

Who is your role model in football?

I have lots of them. I love seeing Godfrey Oboabona play. Osaze Odemwingie is another player I enjoy watching. There’s also Olowo Emmanuel. I’m not saying there are no better players but I have confidence whenever I see these players perform. I’m an Arsenal fan so I love watching their defenders at work.

What was your parents’ decision when you decided to play football?

That is a big one. They never supported me when I started. They were totally against it so I had to play football in secrecy. I was very young when I decided that I would play football. I had to struggle for money to buy boots to play. On many occasions I had to fish at a river around Alapere in Lagos so as to earn money to buy football kits. I did a few other odd jobs to get along. I became a labourer at construction sites just to earn money in order to actualise my dream. I got about N5,000 to buy what I wanted. But when I eventually got the kits, I couldn’t bring them home because I was afraid what my parents would do to me. I still have a scar on my head which I got after a severe beating for coming home later after a football match in Mile 12. When I went to Crown FC to play for two months, my parents didn’t know where I was. I actually ran away from home to play with the team. You can imagine how sad I was when the club couldn’t sign me on. Right now, my parents are proud of me.

What is your target in football?

Every player wants to be the best, I’m not different. I’d love to play in Turkey or any top league. I would have said England but the Premier League wants players who have played a certain percentage in their national team’s campaign. I’m relatively new in the national team so I have to work my way to the top.
SAD NEWS: Deadly car bomb hits Baghdad military office

Just coming in some minutes ago this, i felt bad reading this
A car bomb has hit a military intelligence office in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killing at least eight people and injuring 25 others, Al Jazeera has learned.

The explosion on Saturday targeted the Karada neighbourhood where the intelligence office, which also houses a police station, is located.

The attack came a day after a Shia armed group killed at least 73 Sunni Muslim worshipers at a village mosque in Diyala province, raising the prospect of revenge attacks as politicians try to form a government capable of countering the Islamic State group.

Al Jazeera’s Jane Arraf, reporting from Erbil, said that latest bombing in Baghdad adds to the already “very volatile” security situation in the country.

An advance by Islamic State through northern Iraq has alarmed the Baghdad government and its Western allies. The US began airstrikes in Iraq for the first time since the withdrawal of its troops in 2011.

Although the air campaign has caused a few setbacks for Islamic State, they do not address the wider problem of sectarian warfare which the group has fueled with attacks on Shias.

Bombings, kidnappings and execution-style shootings occur almost daily, echoing the dark days of 2006-2007, the peak of a sectarian civil war.
Ebola: First Consultant Hospital speaks on late Sawyer
The management of First Consultant Hospital, Obalende, Lagos State, late Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer who brought the Ebola Virus Disease to Nigeria, has said that it took necessary measures in line with international standards to prevent the spread of the virus.

In a press statement by management of the hospital, it said in spite of denial by Sawyer, who described himself as a Senior Diplomat from Liberia, adequate measures were taken, which included, isolating the patient, implementing barrier nursing and contacting the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Health.
It said, “A 40-year-old gentleman came into the hospital with symptoms suggestive of Malaria (fever, headache, extreme weakness) on Sunday, July 20, 2014. He was fully conscious and gave us his clinical history and told us he is a Senior Diplomat from Liberia. Laboratory investigations confirmed malaria whilst other test for HIV, Hepatitis B&C were negative. He was admitted and treatment commenced.

“However, due to the fact that he was not responding to treatment but rather was developing haemorrhagic symptoms we further questioned him. He denied having been in contact with any persons with EVD at home, in any hospital or at any burial.”

Having treated for malaria with no significant improvement, the management carried out tests for possible infectious haemorrhagic disease, especially Ebola, based on fact that he was from Liberia, which had recently witness Ebola outbreak.

It said, “We refused for him to be let out of the hospital in spite of intense pressure, as we were told that he was a senior ECOWAS official and had an important role to play at the ECOWAS convention in Calabar, Cross River State.

“The initial test results from LUTH laboratory indicated a signal of possible Ebola virus, but required confirmation.

“We then took the further step of reaching out to Senior Officials in the office of the Secretary of Health of the United States of America who promptly assisted us with contacts at the centres for Disease Control and World Health Organisation Regional Laboratory Centre in Senegal.

“Working jointly with the State, Federal Agencies and International Agencies, we were able to obtain confirmation of Ebola (Zaire strain), (WHO Regional Center Lab-Senegal/Redeemes lab/LUTH Laboratory). He afterwards died on July 25, 2014 at about 6.50am.

“All agencies were promptly notified and in consultation with WHO, Regional Ebola Virus Disease Centre in Conakry, Guinea and Best Practices, we commenced temporary shut down of the hospital with immediate evacuation of in-house patients

“The appropriate professional removal of the body and its incineration under WHO guidelines, witnessed by all appropriate agencies was carried out.

“In keeping with WHO guidelines, the hospital is shut down briefly as full decontamination exercise is currently in progress.

“We hope that by our action of preventing this gentleman from being extracted from our hospital and traveling to Calabar we have been able to prevent the spread of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria.”
